You are right that Tomcat is just one option, but likely most are using Spring boot with Tomcat when building microservices. I found that many engineers don't know about the thread-per-request model that Tomcat uses and scalability limitations that it offer. So this goal of this article is to raise that awareness and talk about ways to deal with it.

You are right about performance and scalability being two different concepts. I have the bad habit of using them interchangeably.
